Both Tarot and Oracle cards are used for insight, perspective, clarity, personal growth, and inspiration. However, Tarot has ancient roots whereas Oracle cards are like the new kids on the block. Oracle cards are more free-flowing and easier to learn, whereas Tarot has a traditional structure and takes a level of practice to become proficient. I like to think Tarot cards are like pages of a book, each card telling part of the story, whereas Oracle cards are like the whole chapter.
The Tarot deck consists of 78 cards — 22 cards that form the Major Arcana (The Fool through The World) and represent major life lessons. The other 56 cards form the Minor Arcana (4 Suits - wands, swords, cups, and pentacles) and represent your paths through life. Every Tarot deck has a traditional structure and common meanings.
Tarot is a universal language that speaks to you through symbols and numbers. Getting to know these symbols can help bring hidden depths of yourself to the surface. Helping you to understand what’s going on around you so you can choose how to respond. Readers use Tarot spreads, which are arrangements of Tarot cards used to reveal a storyline that gives guidance and insight into a question you ask.
Oracle decks are similar to Tarot, but much simpler. You don’t have to place them into a certain spread (although you can), and you don't have to memorize their meanings or know what they all mean when pulled together. You just shuffle the deck, pull the card that feels right, and read what it says. There are no rules.
I like to think of Oracle cards as inspirational quotes. Personally, I like to draw one oracle card in the morning and treat it as my affirmation for the day. Unlike Tarot, Oracle decks can contain any content and can have any amount of cards. Oracle decks are more free flowing, with less structure. These are great for beginners as they are easy to read and offer more flexibility and creativity.
Start your reading off by thinking of a question that can’t be answered with a yes or no.
Examples:
Then, take your cards in your hands and knock the pile of cards on a flat surface several times to remove any stagnant energy they may be holding and to spread your energy into the deck. Think of your question while holding your cards and try to feel it deeply. When you’re ready, shuffle the cards. Shuffle the cards as long as you want or until you feel it’s time to stop and spread out the cards.
Choose the one card you’re drawn to. Sometimes a card will jump out of the pile during shuffling. There is usually a reason for this - the universe is trying to tell you something. If you feel that’s the card for you, choose that card.
Consult the guidebook or use your intuition. The card you intuitively picked will give you the answers and guidance you need that day and forward!
You can ask any question that can't be answered with yes or no, and receive immediate answers with this simple, one-card spread. This spread is great for those with busy lives. This way you have no excuse for missing your daily Tarot ritual!
Simply ask a question, and pull one card for guidance.
This three-card spread is relatively simple and is ideal for beginners. Not only is it a classic, but it’s also adaptable to many questions. It provides enough information for deeper insights without overwhelming you.
The first card represents elements from the past affecting the present.
The second card represents your current position.
Finally, the third card represents the likely outcome - what the future may hold.
This is a 10-card spread, not recommended for beginners. This is a great spread if you're looking for answers to a specific question.
The first two cards are laid out into a cross.
1. Your current situation
2. Overlapping the first card horizontally - A primary obstacle that must be faced as you address the issue.
3. Above the cross - How do you view yourself in the situation?
4. Right of the cross - What you need to let go of
5. Below the cross - Advice from your spirit guides
6. Left of the cross - Your near future
The next 4 cards are placed in a vertical line to the right of the first 6 cards.
7. If your spirit guide was watching you through a crystal ball, what would they see?
8. How do others view you in the situation?
9. Your hopes or fears (depending on the card)
10. Your final outcome if you continue on your current path
I would then summarize the spread and draw any additional cards if you need clarification.
